Key Factors For a Successful Stroke Recovery

• See yourself, or loved one, as a survivor not a victim: The term “stroke victim” makes a person feel weak and ill, while “stroke survivor” gives the person strength and courage to move on. 
• Attend a support group: One of the best things stroke survivors and caregivers can do is find a stroke support group to get help and information.  To find a support group in your area log on to the American Stroke Association’s website at http://www.strokeassociation.org/strokegroup and enter your zip code, or call 1-888-4-Stroke.
• Find resources that offer helpful information: Subscribe to Stroke Connection Magazine.  It is free and contains helpful information and inspiring stories.
• Strive for independence: Caregivers should encourage survivors to be independent, and stroke survivors should work toward the same goal while remaining safe.
• Reduce stress: Stress is cumulative; it grows.  Caregivers can reduce stress by taking care of themselves in some way each day.

Driving is dangerous when the survivor:

• Drives too fast or too slow for road conditions or posted speeds
• Needs help or instructions from passengers
• Doesn’t observe signs or signals
• Makes slow or poor decisions about distance
• Gets easily frustrated or confused
• Gets lost often, even in familiar areas
• Has accidents or close calls
• Drifts across lane markings into other lanes

About the Authors

Jon Caswell has been lead editor and staff writer of Stroke Connection Magazine, published by the American Stroke Association, for more than 10 years. During that time he has written about many of the emotional travails and triumphs of stroke survivors and their caregivers. Over the years he has covered most of the scientific developments that are improving the lives of stroke families. In addition to his career as a writer, Jon was an instructor in the Wellness Department of Southern Methodist University for 15 years. He teaches “Finding Time Sitting Still,” a meditation class, with Linda, his wife of 25 years. They live in Dallas, Texas.

Maria M. Meyer has been a long-time advocate of social causes, beginning with her work as co-founder of the Society for Abused Children of the Children’s Home Society of Florida and founding executive director of the Children’s Foundation of Greater Miami. When her father-in-law suffered a stroke in 1993, Maria became aware of the need for better information about how to care for an aging parent, a responsibility shared by millions of Americans. She is a keynote speaker and workshop leader on caregiver topics to healthcare professionals and community groups, as well as a Caregiver Community Action Network volunteer for the National Family Caregiver Association.

Paula Derr has been employed by the Sisters of Providence Health System for over 25 years and is clinical educator for three emergency departments in the Portland metropolitan area. Her personal and professional experience adds depth to many chapters of this book.
